5 LGBT things you need to know today, July 10

1. The 2014 Emmy nominations were announced this morning and there are plenty of LGBT connections on the list. First and foremost, actress and activist Laverne Cox made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to receive an Emmy nomination. Her show, “Orange is the New Black,” racked up 12 nominations, including three for actresses who play lesbian or bisexual characters in the show—Taylor Schilling, Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba. HBO’s AIDS drama “The Normal Heart” picked up 16 nominations, with out actors Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and Joe Mantello all making the cut. Out lesbian Kate McKinnon was the only “Saturday Night Live” cast member to nab a nomination, and other out actors on the list include Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Nathan Lane for “Modern Family” and Jane Lynch for best reality show host for “Hollywood Game Night.”

2. “How are we to understand a phrase that older people find homophobic, but many younger people do not find offensive and even use themselves?” A Durham University lecturer in sociology asks whether it’s okay for kids to say “That’s so gay.”

3. “It helps put a relatively pleasant end on an unpleasant situation.” A former Tacoma, Washington teacher gets an apology from the school that fired him for being gay—42 years after the incident.

4. “Fox & Friends” host can’t stop laughing while reporting on a university’s gender-neutral bathrooms, which makes sense because people can’t stop laughing at Fox News.

5. VIDEO OF THE DAY: Scary. Neo-Nazis attack a Ukrainian gay club, rushing the door and reportedly throwing smoke bombs and firecrackers inside before fleeing.
