Benefit to aid launch of Pride School Atlanta for LGBT kids

The region’s first K-12 nonprofit school for LGBTQQIA educators, students and families is launching this fall, but they need the community’s help to make it sustainable. So Pride School Atlanta organizers are hoping for a big draw at this Saturday’s benefit show at Kavarna in Decatur.

Youth and older folk artists will be donating art to be sold or traded for donations at the event, live music will be provided courtesy of Pale Clear, Bucky Motter, Jed Drummond and Kris Hines, and food and drinks (including adult beverages) will be available for this all ages show.

The school is the brainchild of Christian Zsilavetz, a transgender man who has over 20 years of teaching experience and is certified by GLSEN to do LGBT training. He came up with the idea two years ago this month while working at a small private school after he realized that even though he had transitioned eight years prior, he was not out to families and most of the staff.

“Pride School Atlanta is super excited to have Pale Clear, Bucky Motter, Jed Drummond and Kris Hines all performing this Saturday night. Bringing our community together is just as important as raising money to support the opening of Pride School Atlanta and its inaugural class. We are thrilled to also have local artists and business owners donate to our silent auction and raffle. Saturday night’s event will likely raise close to $2000 if not more,” Zsilavetz tells Georgia Voice.

“As a sidenote, the Mr. and Miss Black USA pageant are donating the proceeds of their raffle on the same evening to Pride School Atlanta, so we will have a presence there as well at their event at the Porter Sanford Auditorium on Saturday night , with close to 500 people in attendance. Both events give us a chance to bring more families to Pride School Atlanta and support local artists and businesses to boot!”
