A bill to protect LGBT employees of the state of Georgia from job discrimination will be introduced in the Georgia House on Wednesday.

The measure is sponsored by state Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), who is Georgia's first openly gay state lawmaker and one of two lesbians currently serving in the state House.

It currently has 70 sponsors and cosponsors, including 12 Republicans, according to Georgia Equality, which sent out an Action Alert about the legislation today.

“The legislation would amend Chapter 19 (Labor Practices); Article 2 (Fair Employment Practices) to add safeguards from discrimination in public employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” Georgia Equality stated in the alert.

The alert called on constituents of the bill’s sponsors to contact their lawmakers and thank them for their support before the bill is officially introduced tomorrow.

“As they face opposition that will surely surface, they need to know that they have strong support on this issue from their constituents,” the LGBT advocacy group stated.

The measure is unlikely to move this year. Crossover Day, the day by which a bill must pass one chamber in order to be considered by the other, has already passed, and the General Assembly is set to adjourn on April 14.
