Chaz Bono set to attend annual transgender conference in Atlanta The GA Voice Editors June 30, 2010 Atlanta Dee said she received help from Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, in getting Bono to attend this year. “With the help of Mara Keisling, I have some great news to report!” Dee said in the email sent out this week. “I have spoken with Chaz Bono and I have convinced him that he needs to attend SCC … he agreed! He will be doing a seminar with his friend Nick Adams, and as he put it, will be ‘just hanging out with the guys’! So if you want to ‘hang with Chaz’ and listen to him speak, you need to get with it and register!” Adams is the spokesperson for the GLAAD media awards. Bono, the only child of Sonny Bono and famed gay icon Cher, came out as a lesbian in 1987 to his parents and then publicly in The Advocate in 1995. He became a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign and also worked as the entertainment media director for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He has written two books, “Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming Out Process for Gays, Lesbians, and Their Families” in 1998, and “The End of Innocence: A Memoir” in 2003. According to his website, he is working on a third book set for release in 2011. Bono first spoke publicly about his gender transition to Mary Hart of Entertainment Tonight in October 2009, saying gender is what’s “between your ears, not your legs.” In May, Bono had his name and sex legally changed. He currently lives in L.A. with his partner, Jennifer Elia. Watch a clip of Bono speaking to Good Morning America in November about his transition.
