Comedian, actress Lea DeLaria to perform at Atlanta Pride

Comedian/actress Lea DeLaria, best known as Big Boo from the Netflix hit “Orange is the New Black,” will serve as an honorary grand marshal and will perform at Atlanta Pride.

“Lea DeLaria has been an out, loud, and proud artist during her entire career, tackling comedy, music, and acting all while confronting stereotypes surrounding butch lesbians and educating audiences about the LGBTQ experience,” said Atlanta Pride Committee Executive Director Buck Cooke in a prepared statement. “Because of her groundbreaking work as the first openly gay stand-up comedian to perform on television in the U.S. and for her continued activism, we are delighted to recognize her as the Honorary Grand Marshal for the 2014 Atlanta Pride Parade.”

Atlanta Pride is set for Oct. 11-12 in Piedmont Park. DeLaria will ride in the parade on Sunday, Oct. 12, and will also perform Sunday on the Coca-Cola stage.

This will not be the first, or second, time DeLaria has entertained at Atlanta Pride. She previously performed here for the event in 1992 and 1997, long before she reached her current height of popularity.

Cooke added, “She is fantastic as Big Boo on ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and brings her nuanced character to life in a way that embraces the ‘sex’ in ‘homosexual’ but at the same time portrays Big Boo with a great deal of intellect and heart.”

DeLaria is looking forward to one thing in particular when she gets here.

“It is an honor to be selected as an Honorary Grand Marshal for the Atlanta Pride Parade,” she said in an Atlanta Pride press release. “I cannot wait to get back to Atlanta! The girls there are really hot.”

DeLaria’s appearance will round out an already impressive lineup for Atlanta Pride this year that includes Meghan Trainor, the singer of the No. 1 hit “All About That Bass,  dance music icon Amber , and “Bubbly” singer Colby Caillat.
