Gay Atlanta social media roundup on Snowjam 2014

Atlanta’s LGBT community wasn’t shy when voicing their opinions about Snowjam/Snowpocalypse/Snowmaggedon 2014. Some ranted, some joked, many drank. Here’s a roundup of gay Atlanta voices on Facebook from this afternoon to give you an idea of what the community is talking about on Day Two.

Included in the roundup are gay couple Randall D. Fox and Patrick Dennis, founders of several arts festivals in metro Atlanta.

The governor and the mayor today said that “maybe’s” are not good enough to call emergencies when winter storms hit. I have a reality check for him; Atlanta CANNOT keep the roads open in the middle of a winter storm. Yesterday proved that. To that, even by the mere threat of snow in the metro the interstates need to be shut down to all but essential traffic so salt and plows can clear the snow and ice.

THE FACT IS Atlanta simply does not have the infrastructure to keep roads open in a winter storm. There are not enough plows and not enough salt. WE saw what happens when snow is coming down in any material quantity with cars still on the roads.

WE just don’t have the infrastructure requirements to keep the roads open and keep them totally clear. We are not Boston or Chicago that have hundreds of plows. We have enough plows (post 2011) to clear the roads in a reasonable time-frame, but not with cars on them at the same time.

So let us look at the facts. These storms are rare. They only happen once every few years at most. Therefore it is just reasonable to say, shut down BEFORE the storm shuts you down for you. It will allow everything to just start moving faster AFTER the storm and everyone will be much safer for it.

Well that was a bust. Trying to get to #‎CC2014‬ in Houston. Icy roads so I was gonna rebook my flight to tomorrow. Then flight was delayed so I rushed to pack. Ventured out; parked at train station; stood in freezing cold for 20 mins; now I’m on the train to the airport aaaand the flights canceled. As are all flights to Houston. God clearly doesn’t want me to be surrounded by 4,000 queer activists. Hmmm.

I very much liked Kasim Reed…until today. And I have no problem with mistakes being made. Glad it wasn’t my call. But this talking to everyone like they are children and the tone that he has taken that seems to deem all their questions as silly and a waste of his time has officially made me dislike him.

Snowmageddon won’t be complete if I don’t get drunk and recreate “Let It Go” from Frozen.

Does anyone else thinking Chris Cristie is responsible for all of this… He’s punishing our Mayor!?!?!

Update from latest City Council conference call with Mayor Reed:

– All APS students that spent the night in our schools are either home or on their way.
– City is continuing to support GDOT in unclogging the interstates.
– City will be mobilizing with meals this evening for those that are still stranded in their cars and in shelters, fire stations, etc. Please help us make sure those in need are accounted for by calling 911 or Michael Sterling in the Mayor’s office at 404-664-1921.
– Please stay off the roads if at all possible, particularly as temperatures begin to dip again and the water refreezes.
– The City and APS will remained closed tomorrow.

In positive Atlanta news, Governor Deal just solidified (no pun intended) his re-election loss to Jason Carter. He lost all of rural Atlanta by demonstrating that he really is an idiot. How’s that “limited government” thing working?

Cars left on side of roads…cars will be towed to the side of the road where they are…out of the way so roads can be cleaned…instead of tow yards…Channel 2 News…just kept in…

Who needs state patrol?! My badass partner Andria Townehas now organized the neighbors to begin directing traffic down the on ramp to clear the back up!!!!

And beloved Bubba D. Licious, who was forced to spend the night at work but made the most of it.

Sometimes there are no words. My thoughts are with everyone, it’s awful to see this state emergency happenening. I’m so proud to see so many people helping others and banding together.
