Get involved with gay sports

With the promise of cooler weather hopefully soon to come, Atlanta’s LGBT sports leagues are gearing up for their fall seasons.

On Saturday, the gay Atlanta Bucks Rugby Club hosts Rugby 101 for prospective players; you can try your luck on the pitch from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Coan Middle School, 1550 Hosea Williams Drive, Atlanta, GA 30317, www.atlantabucksrugby.org.

Also on Saturday, the gay Southern Softpaw League holds its fall sign-up event and cookout to prepare for the season that starts Sept. 18. Today’s event is set for 4–8 p.m. at The Heretic, 2069 Cheshire Bridge Road, Atlanta, GA 30324, www.southernsoftpaw.com.

If that’s not enough, if your favorite sports came back in elementary school, head over to gay sports bar Woof’s, which hosts a Beer Blast today where you can sign up for Atlanta Field Day, the Sept. 18 fundraiser for CHRIS Kids that pits teams in fun games like three-legged races, sack races and Simon Says. Beer blast is 4-8 p.m. at Woofs, 2425 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30324, www.atlantafieldday.org, www.woofsatlanta.com.

On Sunday, the Atlanta Gay Sports Alliance hosts a recruitment social for its gay sports teams, which include the Atlanta Bucks (rugby), Atlanta Rainbow Trout (swimming, diving and water polo), Atlanta Team Tennis Association, Front Runners Atlanta, Hotlanta Soccer Association, Hotlanta Softball League, Hotlanta Volleyball Association and the National Flag Football League of Atlanta. The social is 2-5 p.m. at FROGS Cantina, 931 Monroe Drive #A107, Atlanta, GA 30308, www.atlantagaysports.com.
