Miller announced her candidacy on April 19. She is the president of the Kensington Park Association and is running for the council’s District 4 seat.
Miller was co-chair of First City Network, Georgia oldest LGBT organization, and also co-founded the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police and Gay Community Collaborative.
She was also the first person to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from Savannah Pride.
The city of Savannah will hold municipal elections on Nov. 8. Miller is running against incumbent Mary Ellen Sprague.
Miller said before she officially announced she was running that it was time for Savannah to have openly gay elected officials.
“I’m running first and foremost because I believe the citizens of Savannah deserve a leader that is committed to making sure every resident is given the same opportunity to live safely and happily in their neighborhood,” Miller said. “Because Savannah is so diverse, and because we welcome that diversity, I also think it’s time that an openly gay person be elected to office.”
The election will be held Nov. 8.
