‘We Do’ Campaign brings marriage protest to Decatur on Monday

“We know they’ll be denied,” Sarver said. “The point is to take this action, a call for full federal equality. We want LGBT couples married in Massachusetts or Connecticut, we want that to be legally recognized in all 50 states.”

Georgia, along with all of the “Deep South” states, does not recognize or allow same-sex unions.

“LGBT couples married in other states are legal strangers in Georgia. A lot of people don’t realize that couples legally married have zero legal rights afforded to them,” Sarver added. “We’re underlying that.”

The Campaign for Southern Equality is traveling to seven Southern states – Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia — to kick off 2013.

The Decatur event is tentatively planned for DeKalb County Probate Court (556 North McDonough Street, Decatur, GA 30030) for 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 7.
