After being discovered by Joan Jett, Girl in a Coma continues to make a name for itself and is set to release its third CD, “Adventures in Coverland,” on Oct. 19.
A sneak peek of the songs from this album, some already released in April on a 7-inch vinyl, will surely be part of the set list at tonight’s performance at the Masquerade.
Made up of lead singer/guitarist Nina Diaz, her openly gay sister Phanie Diaz on drums, and close friend Jenn Alva, Girl in a Coma has toured extensively with Morrissey, the artist who wrote the song that they named their band after.
Song selections for “Adventures in Coverland” include, “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Come On, Let’s Go,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
“We were raised listening to Patsy Cline, Ritchie Valens and The Beatles. It’s very raw, very real music that was the soundtrack to our mom’s life,” Phanie Diaz says about the songs in a press release.
The San Antonio-based trio was handpicked by Joan Jett for her Blackheart Records label and the rocker continues to mentor and inspire.
As Mexican-Americans, the members of Girl in a Coma were especially disturbed by the immigration developments in Arizona. They added a bonus track to their new CD, “For What It’s Worth,” originally recorded by Buffalo Springfield that is now an anthem calling for change.
“We hope that this record introduces people to some of our favorite music and opens a little door into who we are,” Phanie Diaz says of “Adventures in Coverland.”
