5 LGBT things you need to know today, May 1

1. “I don’t think I sound like a woman. I think I sound like a very small man.” Watch the trailer for filmmaker David Thorpe’s new documentary about why some people sound gay and others don’t, featuring Tim Gunn, Dan Savage, Margaret Cho, Don Lemon, David Sedaris and George Takei.

2. Pope Francis has called for an urgent meeting of senior clerics this fall to debate gay marriage, contraception and other hot-button social issues.

3. We included a story in yesterday’s 5 LGBT Things on Richard DeVos, the anti-gay marriage Orlando Magic owner who has made sizeable donations to combat marriage equality and has been quoted saying the gay community is looking for “special treatment” on the issue. Esquire’s Charles Pierce continued the conversation on DeVos, both in an editorial on the lifetime ban of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his racist comments and in an appearance on PBS Newshour. We’ll keep you posted if this story gains steam.

4. A Kentucky store owner refuses to serve gay customers, but they do allow straight ones to bring guns in. This is legal under Kentucky law, but so is posting pictures to the store’s Yelp page of gay couples holding hands and kissing, which everyone has done in response.

5. If you’ve ever wanted to see James Earl Jones in knee-high red leather lace-up boots, your wish is granted. The Tony-winning Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” presents their “Just Be” campaign promoting individuality and standing up for what you believe in.
