5 LGBT things you need to know today, Aug. 11

    1. “I am old enough to remember when, at the worst of the HIV/AIDS crisis, women both gay and straight came to the aid of gay men. They tended our sick, comforted grieving survivors and even headed our organizations because male leadership was dying off so regularly. It is not enough for us to simply remember and honor what women did for us in those days. It is time to repay the debt. Now.” A Yale professor and author on queer culture talks about what gay men should do next.

    2. Slate on whether “gay culture” will change as more conservatives and Christians in the community come out.

    3. Towleroad on how South Carolina fought marriage equality so hard that it now owes a same-sex couple $135,000.

    4. The Advocate on the web series “Paper Boys” and the rare sighting of a gay Asian protagonist.

    5. VIDEO OF THE DAY: Take a look at the trailer for “Out & Around,” a Logo documentary about a couple's 342-day global journey interviewing and profiling LGBT leaders from more than a dozen countries. The film premieres on August 17.
