Girlyman plays double header tonight

Girlyman performs at Eddie's Attic

Girlyman, the Atlanta-based vocal harmony pop/rock quartet, performs at Eddie’s Attic for two shows on May 12 before heading for several tour stops throughout Europe.

Lead vocalist Doris Muramatsu says everyone in Girlyman would fit into the category of “queer,” and that she and bandmates Ty Greenstein, Nate Borofsky and newest member JJ Jones are excited to to play a duo of hometown shows before heading across the pond.

Girlyman’s fifth studio album “Supernova” was released on iTunes and other digital outlets May 1. Physical copies are due in stores June 19.

It’s title brings a mix of energy — and emotions — after a bumpy ride over the last couple of years. Muramatsu was diagnosed with leukemia in late 2010. The band cancelled a month of shows and questioned their future as their lead singer sat in a hospital enduring blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

The album’s titular track, written by Borofsky, isn’t about Miramatsu, but it helped her get through that time, she says in the band’s bio.

“Later I looked up the definition of supernova,” she says. “It turns out that while it is a dying star, it also gives birth to new stars… as difficult as it was, I wouldn’t trade the experience — it got us where we are now.”

The new album, complete with beats by newest member Jones, gave the artists a new challenge on the road. They could record the deeply layered tracks one at the time, but how were they to play it live?

“We ended up recording songs that were really difficult to play live, and really had to catch up with what we had already become in the studio,” Muramatsu tell GA Voice. “It was a fun, and sometimes frustrating, challenge to make these songs come alive in a different way, but we’ve definitely done it.”
