Atlanta candlelight vigil set for victims of Orlando LGBT club shooting

Atlanta’s LGBT community and allies will come together Sunday for a candlelight vigil in honor of the victims of the early morning shooting at an Orlando LGBT nightclub that left 50 dead and 53 injured.

The vigil will take place at 8:45 p.m. in the parking lot of TEN Atlanta at the corner of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue, which almost a year ago was the site of a community celebration to mark the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down same-sex marriage bans nationwide.

“Let’s meet in TEN’s parking lot at sunset (8:45pm) and stand in solidarity with our brothers & sisters in Orlando,” the event invite reads. “Please bring any candles that you have, even if they are in little glass jars. Whatever you have. We will light up the night. What makes us different makes us beautiful. We need to stand strong in the face of terror and show them they can’t take away our pride. Bring your rainbow flags too!”

The Atlanta Police Department is aware of the event and will be making a statement about increased patrols in the area shortly.

2:35 p.m. UPDATE: There is another vigil taking place at 7 p.m. in the parking lot outside of Burkhart’s. “Please join us in the parking lot outside the Ansley Bars as we pay tribute to those that were lost last night in the Orlando nightclub mass shooting and as we send positive energy, thoughts, and prayers for recovery into the universe for those injured,” the event invite reads.
