Atlanta police: Online threats to gay bars may be hoax

The Atlanta Police Department says that online threats to two Atlanta gay bars may have come from a hacked Twitter account.

The tweet from an account listed as @BrettTEdgerton read “TEN or Blake’s could be the next Orlando. You think I am the type to be the next ‘shooter’? Keep hating me then…” Screenshots of that tweet and others spread on social media Tuesday afternoon, leading many to notify Atlanta police.

Investigators questioned Edgerton Tuesday and turned the case over to Homeland Security. Late Wednesday, authorities say his Twitter account may have been hacked.

Per a post from the APD’s Facebook page:

A preliminary investigation indicates no credible threat to both TEN and BLAKES. Early indication is that the account from which the threats originated may have been hacked. The investigation in is still ongoing.

The APD’s public affairs director Elizabeth Espy told Georgia Voice Thursday morning that they hope to release more information about the investigation later today.
