Though the traditional Pride season occurs during June to coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the Atlanta Pride festival has been held in October for the past four years. Pride organizers have also made an effort to create a schedule of events during the traditional Pride month.
Atlanta Pride will be held Oct. 11-13 at Piedmont Park.
“While many in our community bemoan our move to October for the Atlanta Pride Festival, we are excited to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn with a robust offering of educational programs, social gatherings, and community activities that run the gamut of the LGBTQ community in Atlanta,” said Atlanta Pride Executive Director Buck Cooke.
Many of the events announced by the Atlanta Pride Committee, like the annual East Point Possums drag show and Georgia Equality’s “Evening for Equality,” are June staples. Other events, like the Pet Blessing and a series of events on LGBT history, are new or expanded for 2013.
“One thing we want to do is educate our community about what actually happened on June 28, 1969, which is why we have included the event, ‘Stonewall 101’ on June 6,” Cooke continued. “During this event, we have a panel of Atlantans, some with connections to New York City in the late ‘60s, who can discuss what it was like being LGBTQ during that tumultuous time, so if you’ve ever wondered what happened at the Stonewall Inn or didn’t even know what that was, here’s a great chance to learn from some fantastic pioneers in our community.”
June is also packed with LGBT fundraisers.
“There are a number of fundraisers scheduled during the month of June benefitting a range of organizations. Like many of our community partner organizations, Atlanta Pride is a nonprofit organization and we rely on the support of our donors, small business partners, and corporate sponsors in order to make our festival happen and to keep our festival free for everyone to enjoy. We hope individuals, couples, and families will participate in these fundraisers, which also allow Atlanta Pride to continue our year-round outreach and programming to build community and do important social justice work,” Cooke said.
