The nationally acclaimed photo exhibit “Legendary Children” created by several Atlanta gay photographers and their models, rising starts of Atlanta’s drag scene, took a trip to Savannah, Ga., over the weekend to perform and exhibit — and also premiere a short film that can only be described as spooky, bizarre as well as quite beautiful.
And let’s just say that Nicole Paige Brooks, an icon in Atlanta’s drag culture, may not have won “RuPaul’s Drag Race” but in the short film “Godless Girls” she definitely comes out on top. She kills it, actually. Or them.
“Legendary Children” was a smashing success in Atlanta, but now without its turn at controversy and allegations of being pornographic, forcing several photos of Violet Chachki to be censored.
The work didn’t go unnoticed by Atlanta’s art scene and funders, with one of the photographers, Matthew Terrell, being awarded an Idea Capital grant to chronicle Atlanta’s drag scene even further.
“Godless Girls” follows Brooks as she walks through an expansive house leaving treats for the other queens to swallow or be inspired by and then that’s when the magic — is Lavonia Elberton practicing black magic — happens. Also, I’m always amazed at how Funyuns are consistently used as movie/TV props. (“Breaking Bad” immediately comes to mind.)
“Godless Girls” was directed, produced, written and photographed by Jon Dean and Blake England of Legendary Children and stars Brigitte Bidet, Cayenne Rouge, Ellisorous Rex, Kryean Kally, Lavonia Elberton, Mo’Dest Volgare and Violet Chachki. It was filmed at 917 Piedmont Ave.
