Friends to gather at gay bar to remember ‘Old man Phil’

Blake’s on the Park doorman Phil Hickman memorial today

A memorial for Phil Hickman, a longtime doorman at popular gay bar Blake’s on the Park, will be today at the bar beginning at 9 p.m. Blake’s is located at 227 10th St. NE
Atlanta, GA 30309.

Hickman died June 3 and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote an obituary about him including quotes from many of his friends. Hickman was found with his dog at his side watching TV. He was 64.

Friends are asked to come and share stories of “Old Man Phil,” as he was called. He worked at the bar from the mid-1990s to about 2005.

Steve Gower, Midtown resident and neighbor of Hickman, said he would miss his friend.

“He was really good with animals; you couldn’t ask for a better pet sitter,” said Gower, who let Hickman take care of his two cats and now two dogs when he went away.

“That’s what’s missing right now, the way he pampered my animals.”
