If sold-out hotels are any indication, the annual Atlanta Black Gay Pride celebration will break all records. Both the host hotel, Melia, and the overflow hotel, Loews, have sold out of rooms. Atlanta’s event is often cited as the largest Black Gay Pride event in the world and this year is on track to bear that out. Scheduled over Labor Day weekend, what began as an informal network of house parties has exploded into a series of community and nightlife events that stretch out for almost a week.
Last year more than 100 were held in conjunction with Black Gay Pride and attendance was estimated in the tens of thousands. Although In The Life Atlanta, a non-profit formed in 1996, is the primary organizer various party promoters and social organizations add to the mix.
