Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse brings noted historian and lecturer Richard Hutto to the bookstore tonight at 7:30 p.m. as he reads from his new book, “A Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and Madness in the Heart of Georgia.”

The book tells the true tale of a man named Chester Burge who was charged with the murder of his wife in Macon.

“[A]nd when the trial finally began, the sweet Southern town of Macon witnessed a story of epic proportions: a tale of white columned mansions, an insane asylum, and a volatile mix of taboo interracial relationships and homosexuality,” states a press release about the book.

What makes this story so noteworthy, especially to gay readers, is the trial contains the first documentation of a black man disclosing during he had a sexual relationship with a white man.

And while Burge was eventually cleared of the murder charges, he was charged with sodomy.
