Atlanta Black Pride Celebrates 25 Years

As Atlanta Black Pride prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, it is important to acknowledge the roots of the annual celebration. We were founded and formed in 1996 by a group of six friends who set out to fill a void of inclusion and diversity in the Atlanta metro. In 1996, there was a huge difference in gay in America and Black and gay in America. Most “Pride” celebrations throughout the country did not have or include people of color on the board, in the planning or leadership, however it was okay for them perform on stages and attend certain functions.

Throughout the late ’90s and early 2000’s, the organization and event started to evolve into one of the largest Black Pride celebrations in the country. Atlanta Black Pride has continued to set the standards and format that many Black prides follow, so this year we have stepped the game up. We have incorporated two festival days in the park. These two days are September 4 and 5 at Central Park. These days will be filled with vendors, food trucks, and health and wellness community partners as well as two stages of entertainment.

Staying with our tradition of the host hotel, we have the Atlanta Marriott Midtown (35 14th Street) that will host our signature events: the Welcoming Ceremony, Fashion Show, SpeakFIRE, Literary Café, and Film Festival. This year we have added a new signature event to the Atlanta Black Pride family: The TransLIFE Award Tea. We continue to educate with Friday, September 3 full with workshops that kick off at 11am and end at 5:30pm. For the first time in our history, we have expanded our Film Festival to two days, as well. Our partners Real Bois Talk, Inc. and The NOH8 Campaign will take over Saturday, September 4 at the host hotel.

Real Bois Talk, Inc. has prepared a festive weekend for the LGBTQ Greek fraternities and sororities with their annual LGBTQ Greek Brunch and Greeks In The Park. They also added a new event, The LGBTQ Greek Awards Gala.

Atlanta’s nightlife for Atlanta Black Pride is strong. We work with some of the hottest promoters in Atlanta for partnership with the nightlife. These relationships have been years of respect to the Atlanta Black Pride brand as well as their brand. So please look for the Atlanta Black Pride logo on nightlife flyers to know what we support as well as our website, atlantablackpride.org.
