Atlanta Queer Literary Fest organizers extend celebrating all things gay through October with new events this weekend

Queer art and dance take over Decatur

A queer art exhibition featuring works of multimedia artists, sculptors and photographers will be held at Worthmore Jewelers located in the historic downtown square of Decatur on Friday, Oct. 22 from 6-8 p.m. followed by the first Atlanta Queer Dance Festival at the nearby Beacon Dance Theater.

The art exhibit, titled “Queer Art in Two Places,” features the works of painters Jeffrey Lee Adler, William Cash, Carl Christian, Stephanie Miller, Naylon Mitchell, Michael Morgan, Robert Sherer, Freddie Styles and Timothy Wright; sculptor Jill Ruhlman; and photographers Lea Bennett, Taryn Crenshaw, Mario Mathis and Crystal Mounds.

Artist’s sales by William Cash and Robert Sherer will benefit the Robert Sherer GLBT Scholarship at Kennesaw State University.

After the art show at Worthmore, participants can walk to the nearby Beacon Hill Arts Center for the first queer dance festival featuring performances by Alex Abarca, Brooks & Company (Joanna Brooks), Bubba Carr, Corian Ellisor, Terry Hollis, The Lady Ms. Vagina Jenkins and D. Patton White.

Tickets for the dance fest are $10 and available at the door. Artists pay two-for-one for entry into the dance exhibit.

“The work will be a multicultural mix of style and genre. Hopefully the exhibitions will become annual affairs coordinated in the future by the artists themselves,” said Franklin Abbott, organizer of these events as well as the annual Atlanta Queer Literary Arts Fest, in a press release.

“Part of the purpose of the exhibitions linked to the queer literary and dance festivals is to begin to cross pollinate.”

The events are timed to coincide with other LGBT events in October including the AQLF and Atlanta Pride “to explore a range of ideas and themes, extending beyond the realm of queer life,” Abbott added.
