‘Genderblind’ screens at Black Gay Pride

The story of a young, African-American Christian woman who grapples with her identity and eventually falls in love with another woman is the basic premise for the movie “Genderblind,” showing at this year’s Black Gay Pride.

But what filmmaker, artist and dancer LaNita Joseph, 27, didn’t know when she made “Genderblind” is the somewhat large controversy that would surround her small-budget movie.

“It’s become so controversial. I didn’t realize it would be that way,” says Joseph, who wrote, produced and directed the film.

How do you say “Lifetime Television” in Swedish? The story told in “Patrik, Age 1.5” (“Patrik 1,5”), which debuted in last year’s Out on Film, is very familiar, but in most versions the principal couple is heterosexual. (“Breakfast with Scot” was a recent exception.)

Göran (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Sven (Torkel Petersson) are not hetero, and they’ve got the wedding rings to prove it. Oh, Sven was married to a woman once, and she brings their reluctant 16-year-old daughter around periodically to remind him.

The Kids are All Right

Having dabbled in screen lesbianism before — in isolated scenes opposite Toni Collette in “The Hours,” Amanda Seyfried in “Chloe” and Blake Lively in “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” — Julianne Moore finally goes all the way with Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right.”

Directed and co-written (with Stuart Blumberg) by lesbian filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko (“High Art”), the new movie casts Moore and Bening as Jules and Nic, a longtime couple.  When their teen children, played by Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson, decide to make contact with their sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo), alternately humorous and heartfelt complications ensue.

Stonewall Riots

Georgia native David Carter is the author of “Stonewall: The Riots that Sparked the Gay Revolution,” the meticulously researched 2004 book on which the film “Stonewall Uprising” is based.

As this weekend marks 41 years since Stonewall, and 40 years since the first Gay Pride celebrations, we caught up with Carter — who now lives in New York City — to discuss his role in making the film, the myths that still surround the riots, and what we can still learn from Stonewall today.

“Before Stonewall” ended with the Stonewall Riots. “After Stonewall” began with them. Those documentaries from 1984 and 1999 respectively were reissued in a two-DVD set for Pride Month.

“Stonewall Uprising” sounds like it might have been called “During Stonewall,” but an opening title reveals the scarcity of photos and film footage of the actual events. Instead the new documentary uses reenactments and generic materials from the period, in addition to interviews with those involved.

Based in part on David Carter’s book “Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Revolution” (with Carter helping vet the interviewees), “Stonewall Uprising” is mostly a variation on “Before Stonewall.” Except for a brief introduction the June 28, 1969, raid that triggers the riots doesn’t occur until 50 minutes into the film. The last half-hour is about the raid, the riots and the aftermath.

In August 1969, a screening of Andy Warhol’s homoerotic “Lonesome Cowboys” was screened at the former Ansley Mall Mini Cinema.

Police stopped the film, confiscated the property and arrested the theater manager. They also took photographs of the some 70 people attending as they exited the theater, saying they were looking for “known homosexuals.”

Watercolors movie

Out on Film hosts an exclusive screening of the award-winning movie “Watercolors” March 24 at the Ansley Park Playhouse. This will be the only screening of the film in Atlanta, according to Out on Film Director Jim Farmer.

The organization, which hosts an LGBT film festival in Atlanta each October, is expanding its format from the annual festival to hosting screenings throughout the year.
“Our goal is going to be to do these year-round. This one is going to be really special because we have the writer/director of ‘Watercolors,’ David Oliveras, flying in from Los Angeles for this,” Farmer says.
