It may have been a gimmick, but who can deny not smiling, crying, squealing with joy or all three when Queen Latifah married more than 30 gay and straight couples at the Grammys Sunday night?
The Grammy-winning song “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert — and then Madonna! — was enough to have gays across the world clutch their pearls and weep with joy.
Ellen tweeted about it:

Even The Rock was feeling the love:

And lest you think Queen Latifah (did she kind of, sort of, maybe come out tonight?) didn’t have the authority vested in her to legally marry these couples, don’t worry. She did.
Queen Latifah is here explaining that she actually had to be sworn in as a commissioner by the State of California to officiate. #GRAMMYs

The truth is, though, Queen Latifah had a great chance to come out tonight and she didn’t, which some saw as a serious misstep.
Ignorant people: It’s important/wonderful when closeted celebrities come out at moments like this. It’s important/crushing when they DON’T.

One of BET’s Black Power couples was among the gay couples married at the Grammys. Check out their Facebook page.
