Former First Lady Laura Bush wants out of pro-gay marriage TV ad

According to the Dallas Morning News, a representative from Mrs. Bush’s office was not aware of her inclusion in the ad prior to its airing and has asked that the Respect for Marriage Coalition remove her from the ad.

Bush spokeswoman Anne MacDonald said in a statement Wednesday that the former first lady “did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated with the group that made the ad in any way.”

“When she became aware of the advertisement last night, we requested that the group remove her from it,” MacDonald said.

Evan Wolfson, the co-chair of the Respect for Marriage Coalition and president of Freedom to Marry, appeared on MSNBC yesterday to discuss the ad campaign, which also includes a full-page print ad that is running in newspapers across the country.

“America has been on a real journey over the last several years,” Wolfson said. “People have talked about who gay people are, they’ve talked about why marriage matters and a majority of the American people now support the freedom to marry and that majority is an increasingly bi-partisan majority.”

The Respect for Marriage Coalition has yet to release a statement on the ad or Mrs. Bush’s request. See the complete ad below:
