Local charities suffering due to icy roads, seeking volunteers

The snow storm of 2011 has nearly completely shut down the city of Atlanta — and many groups are suffering from it.

One such group, Open Hand Atlanta, is seeking volunteers to brave the icy roads to  deliver meals to critically ill people, including many who have HIV/AIDS.

“Handling a one-day or two-day emergency is something we are always prepared for. But when it stretches into three or four days, we rely on our loyal volunteers more than ever. And right now, we are in dire need of volunteers to help us pack meals tomorrow (Thursday), Friday and Saturday and deliver meals,” Executive Director Stephen Woods told WXIA.

Open Hand Atlanta is asking people who can help to call 404-872-2707.

The Task Force for the Homeless is also asking people to donate prepared meals and bottled water to feed the hundreds of people, including women and children, who are seeking shelter at the Peachtree and Pine location.
