Britt, 63, who is gay and a Democrat, announced his candidacy in April for the District 56 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, currently held by Democrat and gay-rights ally Rep. Kathy Ashe. Ashe announced her retirement in mid-April after more than 20 years under the Gold Dome.
He faces Democrat “Able” Mable Thomas in the July 31 primary. No Republicans are running for the seat so the winner will be decided in July.
Britt is no stranger to Georgia’s political landscape. He’s worked behind-the-scenes for some of Georgia’s most prominent gay and lesbian politicians, but the long-time activist says he’s finally ready for his own shot at elected office.
Britt has also received the endorsements of Georgia Equality and the National Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. He is the retired executive director of Alston & Bird law firm and is veteran community activist for LGBT equality and HIV/AIDS healthcare issues when he worked for AID Atlanta.
As a longtime supporter and volunteer for the state Democratic Party, Britt was also recently appointed to be the community liaison to U.S. Rep. John Lewis’ (D-Atlanta) reelection campaign.
“‘Ken’s ability to represent diverse constituencies and reach across the aisle to achieve consensus is needed in the Georgia General Assembly. When Ken is elected, the people of Georgia District 56 can rest assured that their interests will be well served,” Solmonese said.
