Doraville’s Gay GOP Incumbent loses to challenger

Openly gay Republican Brian Bates, who has held  a city council position there since 2007, has lost to challenger Dawn O’Connor.

In a message he sent out on Twitter around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, he stated the following:

“Congratulations to Dawn O’Connor on her victory tonight. Wishing her the very best in continuing to move the City of Doraville forward.”

Although Bates’  loss as an openly gay candidate comes as a disappointment to many, O’Connor has confirmed she is supportive of LGBT equality and equal marriage rights.

On a positive note, there was no mudslinging between the two during the campaign.

In an interview with GAVO in September she stated had nothing against Bates whatsoever.

“It’s not that I don’t think he hasn’t done a good job, but I’m willing to put all the time necessary into
it,” she said.
