Owner of Atlanta gay bar Oscar’s dies at 65

Edward J. Akers, owner of Midtown Atlanta gay bar Oscar’s, has died at the age of 65.

Akers, who died on May 10, is survived by his partner of 19 years Chris McDonald, who is also a co-owner of the popular Ansley Square bar.

A message was posted on the Oscar’s Facebook page on the day of Akers’ death, leading to numerous tributes from customers, family and friends.

“A lovely man who lit up the room when he entered,” one read.

“Ed was such a sweet man with a great personality to match,” read another.

“This man never failed to greet me with a hug and a smile,” read another, echoing similar sentiments throughout the thread.

A celebration of Akers’ life will be held at Oscar’s on Saturday, May 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
