Second Suspect Arrested in Hate-Motivated Murder of Trey Peters

A second arrest has been made in connection with the hate-motivated murder of DeKalb County gay man Ronald “Trey” Peters, according to the AJC.

DeKalb County police have arrested Shaleeya Moore, the second suspect in the hate crime. She is currently in the DeKalb jail facing murder and armed robbery charges. Joshua Cortez Ellis, the first suspect, was arrested last month, originally on unrelated charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. He now faces a murder charge.

In early June, Peters was targeted by two men who approached him demanding his bag. The attackers shouted homophobic slurs at Peters, shot him twice, and took his belongings. Peters was only 28.

While police have labeled the crime as “hate-motivated,” Georgia does not have any laws in place that worsen the consequences of a hate crime.
