HRC Backs Impeachment Inquiry

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has come out in support of the formal inquiry into the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

An official in the U.S. intelligence community filed a formal whistleblower complaint after seeing Trump make a “troubling” promise the to president of Ukraine. Trump is being alleged to have suggested withholding foreign aid from Ukraine as leverage over a request for the government of Ukraine to investigate Former Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son.

Following this complaint, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal investigation into impeachment.

HRC announced their support of this investigation in a statement released Friday.

“These are serious allegations that, if true, thoroughly compromise the national security of the United States, the constitutional process, and the integrity of our electoral framework,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “The safety and well-being of our democracy is at stake. The U.S. House is right to launch a formal inquiry and investigate all others who may have played a role in these alleged crimes or were aware of them. As the Speaker said, no one is above the law, and that included the President of the United States.”

223 of the 235 House Democrats have backed Pelosi’s inquiry. Nine of the ten LGBTQ legislators have also backed the inquiry – Sen. Krysten Sinema is the only LGBTQ Congress member to not explicitly support the investigation.
