The woman who “invented” gender reveal parties now disagrees with them after her daughter opened her mind to the spectrum of gender.
Jenna Karvunidis came up with the idea to announce to her friends and family that her upcoming child was female in 2008 by revealing a pink cake at a party. After her party, the trend blew up, with hundreds of parents hosting these kinds of parties and making creative blue and pink reveals – including some that went too far, like a blue explosion that led to a 47,000-acre forest fire.
However, now Karvunidis has come out against gender reveals after her daughter opened her eyes to the fluidity of gender.
“She has informed me that there are many different genders and she has informed me that there are many different sexualities,” Jenna told Gay Star News. “She says she’s a girl so I just take her lead on that. This whole gender reveal thing doesn’t make sense to me anymore.”
Karvunidis shared her transformed opinion on her Facebook page on Thursday (July 25).

“I’ve felt a lot of mixed feelings about my random contribution to the culture [of gender reveal parties]. It just exploded into crazy after that. Literally – guns firing, forest fires, more emphasis on gender than has ever been necessary for a baby,” she wrote. “Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now – that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”
“PLOT TWIST,” she added, “the world’s first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”
