J.J. Abrams Hints at LGBTQ Representation in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

Queer Star Wars fans may have something to look forward to, as director J.J. Abrams has hinted that the final film in the Skywalker trilogy will feature some LGBTQ representation.

In an interview with Variety, Abrams sadly dashed fans’ hopes of a same-sex romance between characters Poe Dameron and Finn in the upcoming film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but hinted that other LGBTQ representation may be present.

“That relationship [between Dameron and Finn] to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,” he said. “It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they are, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”

“[But] in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams continued. “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I said.”

Abrams’ comments come after actor Oscar Isaac, who plays Dameron, talked to Entertainment Weekly about his character’s relationship with Finn.

“I think that there is a deep, deep connection between the two of them,” he said. “There’s a deep deep connection between me and John; these guys love each other.”

However, he acknowledged that he was only an actor, so the future of the two was out of him hands—but concluded that the relationship “holds that potential.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
