SAGE conducting housing survey for Atlanta’s LGBT elders

Housing for seniors in the Atlanta area has been a topic of conversation for some time and the Health Initiative currently provides diversity and sensitivity training to staff at current senior citizen homes and community centers which serve a mostly heterosexual constituency.

In 2011, Atlanta’s SAGE chapter was started.

The Phillip Rush Center has become a place for LGBT seniors to gather in the morning to play cards and socialize as well as plan outings and educational programming.

Studies show that as LGBT seniors age, they face housing issues especially when they feel they must retreat back into the closet after moving into an assisted living center because they fear staff may be hostile to LGBT people.
