Despite a heavy downpour at the height of Savannah Pride on Saturday, hundreds of people celebrated being gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender

Savannah Pride shines despite rain

The participants didn’t let the weather damper their spirits to celebrate the 11th annual fest.

Cindy Ussery, 40, of Milledgeville, was holding her sleeping grandson, Jackson, age 20 months.

“This is his first Pride,” she said. Ussery was there with her partner, Stacie McCant, 38. Jackson’t tiny t-shirt read “I love my nanas.”

“We’ve never been to Savannah Pride. We’ve been to Atlanta Pride,” McCant said. Although they were soaked in the heavy rain that fell mid-afternoon, they said they wanted to stay for the full fest.

The fest concluded with headliners and national gay artists Jason & deMarco and then God-des and She to a lively crowd.

The day was also a tribute to Sept. 11. Several veterans spoke at the beginning of Pride to ask for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and praised the recent federal district court ruling stating the anti-gay policy is unconstitutional.

Entertainers also took on the timely topic. Drag queen Christiana Singlair entertained with Melissa Etheridge’s song, “Tuesday Morning.” The song is a tribute to Mark Bingham, a passenger on Flight 93 on Sept. 11 and fought back against the terrorists.
