Actor’s Express pleads for funding, facing ‘life or death moment’

Actor's ExpressActor's Express, one of several Atlanta theater organizations known for producing gay and gay-favorite plays and musicals, is in dire need of financial support, according to an e-mail sent out today by Artistic Director Freddie Ashley.

“Our theatre is at a critical juncture — a true life or death moment,” Ashley, who is gay, says in the e-mail. “As you know from our many recent calls for support, we are fighting to make it through an extraordinarily difficult time for the arts in Atlanta.”

Ashley says in order to save Actor's Express, the organization must raise $50,000 in four weeks and $150,000 in the next four months.

Every Christmas Story Ever Told theater cast

Whether you love or hate Christmas (and I tend to fall in the latter), Actor's Express' holiday offering “Every Christmas Story Ever Told” is a great transition from the Thanksgiving dinner table to the annual gift-giving season.

Three cast members and a small crew of black-clad stagehands keep this delightful theater-in-the-round send-up on its toes.

Chad (Chad Martin) is excited to present the Dickens classic “Christmas Carol,” while Bren (Bren Thomas) and Amber (Amber Chaney) are sick of the run of the mill and insist on presenting all of Christmas' fabled tales... in about two hours.

The cast of Loot

Topher Payne was looking forward to taking a vacation after his recent play “Christina Darling,” but when he learned that auditions for “Loot” were coming up, he knew a vacation could wait. “Loot” opens June 4 at Onstage Atlanta.

Written by gay playwright Joe Orton, “Loot” debuted back in 1965, where it was met with some hostility from those not expecting its satirical tone. The play is a farce about two young men, Hal and Dennis, who are thieves. After robbing a bank next to a funeral parlor, they have to hide the money — and wind up stashing it in the coffin of Hal’s recently deceased mother.

Harvey Fierstein has rarely hesitated taking on challenges, so accepting the iconic role of Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” isn’t as surprising as some people imagine.  Fierstein’s Atlanta leg of the touring musical is the highest-profile production in a busy month of local theater.

Fierstein originally played the role in a 2004 Broadway revival, taking over for actor Alfred Molina in 2005. So he was a natural when the tour needed a last minute replacement.
