Men who have sex with men are banned from donating blood by the Food and Drug Administration over a decades old fear of HIV/AIDS transmission. But a campaign to call attention to the ban was recently announced by documentary filmmaker Ryan James Yezak via a YouTube video.
In the video, Yezak cites new methods of testing and more knowledge about the disease as reasons to lift the ban and announced plans for a July 12 nation-wide "National Gay Blood Drive" as a way to protest the FDA's continued refusal to lift its policy.
