National Organization for Marriage aims to export anti-gay battle to Middle East

Maybe they should change the name to the INTERNATIONAL Organization for Marriage. In the wake of massive losses for marriage equality opponents in last week's elections, leaders of the National Organization for Marriage plan to export their anti-gay strategies — especially to the Middle East, where they hope to draw more sympathy.

Tuesday's vote brought the reelection of President Barack Obama, the first sitting president to personally support marriage rights for same-sex couples, and a string of victories on ballot measures for marriage equality.

Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington affirmed the right of gay couples to marry in their states, while Minnesota became the first state to vote down a proposed state constitutional amendment to define marriage as only between one man and one woman.

So what's an organization dedicated to banning gay marriage to do? Apparently, NOM leader Brian Brown's plan is to whine and appeal to religious extremists -- wherever they may find them.

Moments after today's landmark ruling made by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that found California's same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional, NOM had already sent out a fundraising plea previewing the next round of the ongoing legal battle.

“Moments ago, the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit handed down a sweeping ruling striking down California’s Proposition 8 and — for the first time ever — finding a ‘right’ to same-sex marriage in the United States Constitution!” Brown said in the email.

“A Supreme Court victory would preserve the marriage laws of 44 states, denying same-sex marriage radicals in their campaign to force gay marriage on the entire nation in one fell swoop. But if we lose at the Supreme Court, marriage will be jeopardized not just in California, but in all 50 states,” Brown continued.

National Organization for Marriage logoThe National Organization for Marriage sent out an email to its supporters last week asking for funds to help combat the reelection efforts of seven New York senators, all of whom voted to legalize same-sex marriage, in the upcoming 2012 elections. NOM has pledged $2 million to “oppose pro-SSM legislators” in the coming election.

NOM is targeting Republicans and Democrats who voted in favor of marriage equality as part of a three-phase plan to put the marriage debate back on the table.

National Organization for Marriage logoThe National Organization for Marriage announced today the creation of a new campaign targeted at the King & Spalding law firm over their decision to abandon representation for the U.S. House of Representatives in the ongoing legal battles surrounding the Defense of Marriage Act.

NOM has put together the “We're There Until You Need Us” campaign where supporters are invited to sign a petition telling the law firm the decision to back out of representation is a mistake.

Not that I'm an expert on branding campaigns, but the name of NOM's latest anti-gay effort doesn't make a lot of sense. Who is there until you need them, NOM? King & Spalding?

National Organization for Marriage logoThe bad news keeps piling up for the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage.

Just last week, a new CNN/Opinion Research Poll found that a slim majority of Americans actually support marriage equality for same-sex couples. A similar poll conducted by CBS and the Washington Post also found more Americans than ever before support marriage equality.

And, of course, we can't forget the former NOM strategist, Louis Marinelli, who jumped ship in early April and now supports marriage equality. We have a great interview with Marinelli here, by the way.

On the heels of the news that Atlanta-based King & Spalding would not represent the U.S. House of Representatives in the on-going legal battles against the Defense of Marriage Act, NOM announced today that it was launching an investigation into whether the law firm broke any rules of professional conduct or if the firm “acted illegally” in deciding to withdraw from the case.

National Organization for Marriage President Brian BrownThe anti-gay National Organization for Marriage blasted the Obama administration's monumental decision to refuse to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court after it determined the law unconstitutional.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday that the Department of Justice would not defend the constitutionality of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in two cases where that section of the law is currently under challenge. Section 3 classifies a "marriage" as a union between a man and a woman and a "spouse" as an opposite-sex person.

Brian Brown, NOM's president, called on the U.S. House of Representatives to “intervene to protect DOMA, and to tell the Obama administration they have to respect the limits on their power.”

NOM’s Maggie Gallagher hits the road against same-sex marriage

Maggie Gallagher, chair of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, has been a busy lady this week. Yesterday, Gallagher testified before the Maryland Senate Committee on Judicial Proceedings and will also be in Rhode Island today testifying against same-sex unions.

"Marriage is the union of husband and wife for a reason: these are the only unions that can make new life and connect children in love to their mom and dad,” Gallagher said during her testimony yesterday. “As so many pro-gay marriage voices testified at this very hearing, gay marriage is grounded in the belief that this view of marriage is like objections to interracial marriage — something that should be discarded in law, culture and society."

It’s nice to see Gallagher still using the failed argument that gay marriage will somehow prevent straight couples from having children.

NOM goes to Washington

The National Organization for Marriage hosted a rally in Washington, D.C., yesterday as part of the “Summer for Marriage Tour 2010.”

The stop in Washington was the group’s final location on its 23-city tour. NOM made a stop in Atlanta on Aug. 7.

The Washington Blade was on-hand to cover the D.C. rally and interviewed  Brian Brown, NOM’s executive director. Brown stressed the group’s mission was to maintain the “core definition” of a union between a man and a woman.
