Former members of YouthPride are moving ahead with plans for a new Atlanta LGBT youth organization as the troubled agency remains silent about where it will move after being forced out of its current home due to unpaid rent.

YouthPride Executive Director Terence McPhaul declined an interview this week. The organization must move next month from its space at 1017 Edgewood Ave. and faces a crisis in leadership after admitting that its board of directors has dwindled to below the minimum required in its bylaws and hasn’t met since December 2010.

McPhaul said in a brief statement last month that new sites were being explored and the formation of a new board of directors is “moving fast.” He stressed that YouthPride remains open and operating.

If you happen to be in Midtown April 21, don’t be alarmed if you run into well over 100 buzzed big guys traipsing around in purple dresses.

The sixth annual Purple Dress Run, a fundraiser for the Atlanta Bucks gay rugby team, takes over the city that day, and the 55-man team hopes to raise $5,000 with a little help from their friends.

“The term ‘run’ is used loosely as it’s more of a 5K bar run/walk/crawl/waddle/saunter, depending primarily upon which point along the route you survey the participants,” jokes Bucks President Max Alvarado. “Aside from the occasional wardrobe malfunction along the way, we haven’t lost a runner yet.”

The attorney for Inman Park United Methodist Church, which leases space to YouthPride and is suing after months of unpaid rent, strongly disputes a charge from the LGBT youth agency's executive director that the organization has any legal claims against the church.

"As it relates to the $40,000 rent, which we have always said was overpriced… the bottom line is this: We have legal claims against the church as well," YouthPride Executive Director Terence McPhaul told attendees at a March 6 town hall meeting, which was hosted by an independent task force concerned about the future of LGBT youth services in Atlanta.

"We had legal claims against the church as well," McPhaul repeated. "So there were certain things that we actually missed out on as a result of certain things the church did not comply with — so we haven't answered the lawsuit yet, but we will, and soon."

Community benefits pack March calendar

From an all-volunteer cabaret to help kids to a costume party that celebrates a Jewish holiday while supporting LGBT rights, the weekend of March 9-10 will be busy with benefits.

CHRIS Kids, a local provider of housing and services programs for youth, will host its Seasons of Love cabaret benefit March 9-10 at the 14th Street Playhouse.
The annual event, celebrating its 10th year, features cabaret singing and dancing from an all-volunteer cast and crew over two nights.

This year’s event, “Encore! The Best of 10 Years of Seasons of Love,” will relive many of the best moments of the fundraiser’s history. Some 35 numbers will be performed, ranging from pop to Motown to Broadway classics, says JD Kellum, a CHRIS Kids boardmember and performer in the cabaret.
