YouthPride did not provide services to LGBTQ youth as promised as part of a $40,000 grant from Fulton County during 2011-2012 — and now the county government is demanding some of its money back.
Cynthia McRae, District 6 administrator of the Fulton County Housing & Human Services Department's Office of Grants & Community Partnerships, told GA Voice Friday that YouthPride failed to provide the services of the $40,000 F.R.E.S.H. grant awarded in 2011-2012.
Out on Film, Atlanta's annual LGBTQ film festival, announced this morning it had received a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts. Atlanta Freedom Bands, the city's gay and lesbian band, has also been awarded a grant, according to the GCA.
The funds are appropriated for fiscal year 2014.
“We are ecstatic,” Jim Farmer, Out On Film’s festival director, said today via a media release. “Not only is this a tremendous financial gift but a real boost of confidence. We are grateful for the Georgia Council for the Arts’ continued support of what we do.”
Jerusalem House, Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus up for grants
Southwest Airlines, new to Atlanta thanks to a merger with AirTran, is celebrating its arrival to the Peach State by awarding $75,000 in grants to local charities.
Among the 15 organizations vying for one of the grants is the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus. The chorus, listed in the “small charity” group, is up against VOX Teen Communications, Good Mews Animal Foundation, Nuci's Space and Coastal Counseling Center.
Georgia residents – sorry out of state readers – can vote for one winner in each category (small, medium and large charities), once a day until March 18.
Voters will also be entered to win a trip for two to Las Vegas, courtesy of Southwest, that includes tickets to a Cirque du Soleil production, round-trip airfare and four nights in the ARIA Resort & Casino.
Jerusalem House, Atlanta's oldest and largest provider of housing for homeless and low-income individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, is in the running for a $250,000 grant from the Home Depot Foundation.
The local nonprofit was also awarded a $25,000 grant last year as part of the Aprons in Action campaign where users of the social networking site Facebook voted for one of three nonprofits per month.
Each of the monthly finalists will now have one month to secure as many votes for their organization as possible. Click here to vote: https://www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation?sk=app_112064278918490

Local nonprofit in the running for Home Depot Foundation grant
The Atlanta AIDS Partnership announced a $250,000 grant from the White House's Social Innovation Fund through AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund). The grant, one of 10 given to HIV/AIDS organizations around the country, will go to providing HIV care through primary health care providers in Atlanta’s most affected communities.
According to the Atlanta AIDS Partnership, transportation issues and the stigma of visiting an AIDS service organization prevent many people living with HIV/AIDS from getting the care they need to live a healthy life. In an effort to address the imbalance, the grant money will be directed to free and low-income clinics as well as toward federally qualified health care centers.
“Increasing the ability of smart, effective organizations to reach more individuals is critical to the work of The Community Foundation,” Alicia Philipp, president of the Atlanta AIDS Partnership, said in a press release. “As a local partner in this effort, our role is to bring resources to meet the demand in our region to help tackle an issue that affects so many in our communities.”
The Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative has received an $85,000 one-year grant to work with the state to determine tobacco usage and prevention methods within the LGBT community.
