Editor's note: Hussey and Wilson received and email from the Macon Telegraph's classified department's advertising manager Cleo Wright saying the newspaper reconsidered the position and their announcement will now be posted in the newspaper. From an email to Wilson today, June 7, from Wright:
Laura
In regards to the notice submitted for publication in The Telegraph and after further review it will publish on August 26th as requested. We will send a proof prior to publication for approval. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Laura Wilson has visited Macon, Ga., the hometown of her future wife, Rachel Hussey, and knows it is not one of the more progressive cities in the country.
But she said she was still surprised when the local newspaper, the Macon Telegraph, refused to publish their short wedding announcement after they submitted it last week. Why? Because, they were told, the Telegraph is "not able to accept … same sex announcements at this time. It is not recognized as legal in Georgia and therefore we are unable to publish them."
