Around 30 supporters of GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum gathered outside of the Georgia Capitol today as part of the Susan B. Anthony List's “Rick Bus” tour. Noticeably absent was Maggie Gallagher, former chair of the National Organization for Marriage.
Gallagher had been slated to speak at the event as late as today, according to the group's website. An organizer for today's rally said Gallagher was in Minnesota and was unable to make it to Georgia in time for the rally.
Several speakers addressed the handful of attendees who gathered to support Santorum ahead of the state's Super Tuesday primary. A few Georgia politicians and a small group of local supporters were on-hand for today's rally.
Local activists are teaming up with participants from the Soulforce Equality Ride to protest a planned Atlanta visit by the Susan B. Anthony List's “Rick Bus” tour today in Atlanta.
The tour, featuring conservative and religious advocates who support the presidential campaign of former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), will be held at the Georgia Capitol building at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Atlanta's Queer Justice League along with GetEQUAL are organizing today's protest. Soulforce, which was already in the state, announced this morning it would join the protest.
Maggie Gallagher, the former chair of the National Organization for Marriage, will bring her unique brand of crazy to Georgia ahead of the state's Super Tuesday primary as part of the Susan B. Anthony List's “Rick Bus” tour.
The tour features conservative and religious activists who support the presidential candidacy of former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and will make stops in Columbus and Augusta on Saturday, March 3; and Savannah, Macon and Atlanta on Monday, March 5.
Also joining Gallagher is former Colorado U.S. Rep Marilyn Musgrave. You may remember her as the sponsor of the failed Federal Marriage Amendment. She, like Gallagher, has made a treasure trove of anti-gay statements during her career.
Maggie Gallagher, chair of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, has been a busy lady this week. Yesterday, Gallagher testified before the Maryland Senate Committee on Judicial Proceedings and will also be in Rhode Island today testifying against same-sex unions.
"Marriage is the union of husband and wife for a reason: these are the only unions that can make new life and connect children in love to their mom and dad,” Gallagher said during her testimony yesterday. “As so many pro-gay marriage voices testified at this very hearing, gay marriage is grounded in the belief that this view of marriage is like objections to interracial marriage — something that should be discarded in law, culture and society."
It’s nice to see Gallagher still using the failed argument that gay marriage will somehow prevent straight couples from having children.
The National Organization for Marriage hosted a rally in Washington, D.C., yesterday as part of the “Summer for Marriage Tour 2010.”
The stop in Washington was the group’s final location on its 23-city tour. NOM made a stop in Atlanta on Aug. 7.
The Washington Blade was on-hand to cover the D.C. rally and interviewed Brian Brown, NOM’s executive director. Brown stressed the group’s mission was to maintain the “core definition” of a union between a man and a woman.
