White House responds to DOMA petition

President Obama's administration announced it would no longer defend DOMA in court

The White House responded this week to an online petition calling for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law that prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions.

The "We the People" petitions, an initiative created by the White House, offer citizens a chance to call on President Obama and his administration to act on a range of issues from social and domestic to foreign policy and the economy.

One of the most signed petitions called for the repeal of DOMA, which included some 14,000 signatures.

Here is the official response from Gautam Raghavan, from the White House Office of Public Engagement:

Speaking Out: How young is too young for gender transition?

GA Voice readers were divided over the case of D., a second grader in Townsend, Ga. (www.thegavoice.com, Aug. 26; update in print edition, Sept. 2).

Labeled a girl at birth, the child began living as a boy last year. Tommy Theollyn, D’s parent who is also a female-to-male transgender, wants him to be able to use the boys’ bathroom at Todd Grant Elementary School, but the McIntosh County Public Schools superintendent refused.

D, who was previously home-schooled, is now being homeschooled again. Meanwhile, a petition Theollyn started on Change.org has more than 31,000 signatures asking for D. to be allowed to use the boys’ bathroom at school.

Change.org petition aims to out Bert and Ernie

Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie

Some 1,200 people have signed a petition on Change.org calling for PBS and the makers of children's show “Sesame Street” to let perennial roommates Bert and Ernie marry. The petition, created by Lair Scott, was posted two days ago. A Facebook page created for the cause has 400 fans.

The petition reads:

In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living. Aside from those that are committing suicide, the bullies that facilitate these tragedies need to learn that homophobia is NOT okay. They need to know that acceptance of their fellow human beings would indeed plant a seed of peace that will reverberate throughout the world. We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives.

Small Ga. newspaper calls gays who want to marry ‘perverts’

Georgia Equality issued an action alert this afternoon over a column in the Sandersville Progress and other Georgia newspapers written by Robert Tribble called “You Might Be A Liberal If...” The column takes several pot-shots at left-wingers and goes as far as to call gays and lesbians wishing to marry “perverts.”

Tribble is the owner of several Georgia newspapers including the Sandersville Progress and the Fayette County News.

There are eight “you might be a liberal ifs” but below is certainly the most offensive to LGBT persons.

"If you think that you know more than God and find it perfectly acceptable for two perverts to marry each other you're a liberal,” one of the bullet points in the letter read.
