Mayor Reed: ‘Screen on the Green’ back on in Piedmont Park

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and the Piedmont Park Conservancy today announced that the popular outdoor movie series “Screen on the Green” will be held at Piedmont Park this year. The Conservancy had previously canceled the series earlier this year when its main corporate sponsor, Peachtree TV, withdrew.

Comcast, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines and Georgia Natural Gas are the new corporate sponsors of the series which will continue during its traditional Thursday night timeslot during the summer. Delta will be the main sponsor.

“As you know, we thought we would have to cancel the 'Screen on the Green' series this summer,” Reed said during a press conference held at Piedmont Park's Magnolia Hall. “However, when four wonderful companies, who have always been strong advocates for the city, learned earlier this month that 'Screen on the Green' would not continue this year, they stepped up with really, really strong support.

Atlantic Station offers up outdoor movies after Piedmont Park cancels ‘Screen on the Green’

Movie-goers at Atlantic Station's outdoor movie event

Atlanta's Piedmont Park will not hold the annual “Screen on the Green” series at the park in 2011, according to the Piedmont Park Conservancy. Organizers of the summer-time outdoor movie nights have been held continuously since 2000, but suffered a tarnished image last year when a melee broke out during a showing of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Organizers say the series' main sponsor, Peachtree TV, pulled out of their sponsorship agreement after a management shuffle in January and they have failed to find a replacement.

“It is our desire to continue the tradition of kicking off every summer with great movies in this great park,” said Yvette Bowen, President of the Piedmont Park Conservancy. “As one of our many free community-building initiatives, we have treasured our first ten years of movies on Piedmont Park’s Meadow. This year’s event, however, the timing of Turner’s announcement left us with too little time to secure sufficient sponsors to support it and, as such, must be cancelled,” she added.

New Legacy Fountain in Atlanta's Piedmont Park

Atlanta's Piedmont Park opened the Legacy Fountain today, the newest addition to a growing list of recently completed expansions.

According to the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the Legacy Fountain features more than 70 jets of water that can shoot streams of water some 30 feet into the air. The fountain also features an LED lighting system capable of producing thousands of display patterns. The Conservancy says the fountain will rival the one in Centennial Olympic Park.

The fountain is located near the Monroe Drive entrance.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was on hand for the official unveiling today and congratulated the park via Twitter: “Congratulations Piedmont Park Conservancy for launching the Legacy Fountain today."

New facilities in the park include three acres of hardwood forest, additional basketball courts, a new aquatic center and an expanded dog park.
