The Georgia Chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER) will hold the chapter’s 6th annual Memorial Day Taps Ceremony today at noon sharp at the veterans monument located in front of the old American Legion hall in Piedmont Park at the intersection of 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue.
AVER Georgia has succeeded after several years in refurbishing the flagpole located on the site with a beautiful new gold eagle ornament and hoisting hardware, says Alejandro Lopez, president of the Georgia chapter of AVER. The City of Atlanta Fire Station located at 170 10th Street volunteered the use of their ladder truck to examine the flagpole and has mounted the eagle on top of the pole. Members of the fire department will be invited to attend the rededication ceremony and will be honored by AVER Georgia for their assistance in renovating the flagpole. The ceremony will include the raising of a new flag and the playing of taps.
American Veterans for Equal Rights National President Danny Ingram will conduct the flag pole re-dedication.
Invocation to be delivered by Rev. Elder Glenna T. Shepherd Pastor of Christ Covenant MCC in Decatur, Ga.
Also, Atlanta Police Interim Police Chief George Turner will be attending this year’s ceremony.
