Mary’s Bartender Bernadette Patterson Passes Away

Earlier this week, Atlanta gay bar Mary’s suffered a loss as bartender Bernadette Patterson passed away.

The bar posted a tribute to Patterson on Facebook.

“Our sister Bernadette Patterson was [a] one of a kind character,” the bar remembered. “If you ever met her, you were sure not to forget her. If you’ve been a long time Mary’s patron then you’ve probably had Bernadette serve you behind the bar and serve it with plenty of attitude! But she was also one of the first to lend an ear when you were having problems.”

“She could read you from across the room with the slightest cut of an eye, but she also looked out for everyone so that they could enjoy themselves safely,” the post continued. “We’ve never been a bigger bulldog wrapped up in such a little package.”

“We’re so very glad to have years and years of memories to hold on to. Bernie, wherever you are we know you’ll be running the show and kicking ass whenever anyone gets out of line.”

Patterson is remembered by Mary’s patrons and friends as “badass,” “kind,” “generous,” and “warm.”

She was also the winner of Best Bartender in Atlanta in our Best of Atlanta awards 2011 and a runner-up in 2015.

“With a no-frills attitude and impressive tattoo sleeves, Patterson is more than just ‘one of the guys’ – she is part of the family and can serve a cold PBR as quick as she can toss out an unruly customer,” the Georgia Voice said of her in 2011. “Cheers, girl. Have the guys buy you a round.”

Patterson reportedly died Monday afternoon.
