[Updated] Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed supports gay marriage
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed today stated his support for marriage equality for same-sex couples, capping off a controversy that has dogged him since his 2009 mayoral race.
Reed made the announcement via a lengthy press release about his decision to sign a marriage equality resolution passed Dec. 3 by the Atlanta City Council. The resolution, approved by the council by a vote of 11-2, was sponsored by Council member Alex Wan, who is openly gay.

His book “Real Man Adventures” (McSweeney’s, $23) includes stories about his life, but is so much more. Besides, Cooper stresses, he’s only 40 and that hardly qualifies him to write a memoir.

Fenton steps down from his position as director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD & TB Prevention after a seven-year tenure on Dec. 21 and returns to his home in the U.K. on Dec. 31.
U.S. Supreme Court to hear Prop. 8, DOMA cases
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage, as well as Proposition 8, the ballot initiative which ended gay marriage in California.
The Prop. 8 case is led by high-profile attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, who famously argued on opposite sides of the Bush/Gore election challenge, who were recruited for the case by the American Foundation for Equal Rights.
