DJs Vicki Powell, Chris Griswold to spin Atlanta Pride Kickoff Party

The Atlanta Pride Committee today announced details for its upcoming Official Kickoff Party to be held at the Georgia Aquarium. The event, now in its 5th year, will be held Friday, Oct. 11, from 7-11:30 p.m. It will feature headliner DJ Vicki Powell spinning in the Atrium and DJ Chris Griswold in the Oceans Ballroom.

“Atlanta Pride is delighted to return to Georgia Aquarium for our fifth annual Official Kick-off Party,” APC Executive Director Buck Cooke said in a prepared statement. “As always, we are excited to see what our partners at Georgia Aquarium come up with in terms of ambiance and decoration for one of the most marvelous cocktail parties in Atlanta.”

Local lesbian attorney Kathleen Womack elected to state bar’s Board of Governors

Local lesbian attorney Kathleen Womack has been elected to the State Bar of Georgia’s Board of Governors, according to the organization.

Womack, a past president of the Stonewall Bar Association and former chair of Georgia Equality’s Board of Directors, was named to the State Bar of Georgia in 2011 but won election for the first time in April.

Gay rights flip-flopper Karen Handel runs for U.S. Senate

Looks like LGBT Georgians can expect another turn as campaign cannon fodder, as Karen Handel has entered the race for U.S. Senate.

The seat, left open when Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) decided not to seek re-election, has already drawn a crowd of GOP big wigs, including U.S. Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston.

Zoning board rejects legislation to erase adult businesses from Cheshire Bridge Road

Applause broke out in the packed Atlanta City Council chambers Thursday after the Zoning Review Board voted to deny approval of legislation that would wipe out strip clubs and other adult businesses along Cheshire Bridge Road by June 30, 2018.

The final vote was two to one with two ZRB members abstaining. The ZRB is a nine-member board and five were at the meeting Thursday: Joe Alcock, David Coleman, Cynthia Miller, Mark Reece and Calvin Lockwood.
