Alex Wan revises Cheshire Bridge Road zoning changes to only adult businesses

Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan in an email today to constituents said he would only target adult businesses in his proposed rezoning ordinances for Cheshire Bridge Road. That means car washes and auto body shops, which were included in the original legislations to be zoned out, are safe for now.

He also is extending the amortization period for the adult business to five years, rather than the original two years.

Ga.’s John Lewis pushes bill to stop anti-LGBT bias in adoption, foster care

U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) will join U.S. Rep.  Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) tomorrow at the U.S. Capitol to discuss the Every Child Deserves a Family Act.

The legislation, if passed, would prohibit federal funds going to foster care or adoption programs that “discriminate against potential adoption families because of marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation or the gender identity of the adoptive child.”

[Photos] Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner draws hundreds to fund national fight

The Human Rights Campaign hosted its annual Atlanta dinner on Saturday, May 4, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel to raise funds for the country’s largest national LGBT advocacy organization.

The dinner began with a performance from Serenbe Playhouse’s production of “Hair.”

Recent victories, including the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and state victories across the country, made the annual dinner more of a celebration than in previous years.

Zoning board rejects legislation to erase adult businesses from Cheshire Bridge Road

Applause broke out in the packed Atlanta City Council chambers Thursday after the Zoning Review Board voted to deny approval of legislation that would wipe out strip clubs and other adult businesses along Cheshire Bridge Road by June 30, 2018.

The final vote was two to one with two ZRB members abstaining. The ZRB is a nine-member board and five were at the meeting Thursday: Joe Alcock, David Coleman, Cynthia Miller, Mark Reece and Calvin Lockwood.

Local couple gets U.S. Rep. David Scott on record in favor of gay marriage

Rob Anglin and his partner, Jens Palsgaard, pulled together charts, polls and even a Power Point presentation as they prepared to meet with U.S. Rep. David Scott at his office in Smyrna, Ga., to discuss his position on same-sex marriage.

“We wanted to get as much stuff put together as possible,” Anglin said. “We were told we would only have 20 to 30 minutes.”
