Alpharetta church organist says he was forced to resign for being gay

Nick Johns, an organist with Saint Brigid Catholic Church in Alpharetta, Ga., claims he was recently forced to resign from his position with the church for being gay after someone at the church took offense to his personal Facebook page.

Johns posted his story, and a letter he sent to his members of his former congregation, on social sharing website reddit over the weekend.

Petition pops up urging Atlanta City Council to outlaw sex shops on Cheshire Bridge Road

A petition popped up this week on change.org urging the Atlanta City Council to banish adult businesses on Cheshire Bridge Road.

Posted to the popular website by a group calling itself “Concerned Atlanta Residents” and made up of people living in the area, the petition states, “Adult businesses are incompatible with residential neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods were here decades before the adult businesses started appearing on Cheshire Bridge through a series of zoning loopholes and poor decisions/enforcement by the City of Atlanta.”

Ga. Rep. Simone Bell named a ‘Harvey Milk Champion of Change’

Ga. Rep. Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) will be honored this week by the White House as one of 10 openly gay elected or appointed officials named as “Harvey Milk Champions of Change.”

The ceremony takes place on Harvey Milk’s birthday and honors the LGBT officials for “their commitment to equality and public service.”

‘Soft’ benefits only for domestic partners at UGA

The University of Georgia will begin to offer some “soft” benefits to employees’ domestic partners, but the plan falls far short of what LGBT staff and allies requested.

School officials announced today that the university will offer employees the option to buy benefits like dental and vision insurance for their domestic partners, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
